Abstract:

This study investigated the spatial association between six dimensions of governance—Control of Corruption, Government Effectiveness, Political Stability and Absence of Violence/Terrorism, Regulatory Quality, Rule of Law, and Voice and Accountability—and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) across thirteen selected African countries in 2023. Using data sourced from the World Bank and the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) portal, the study employed Geo-Economica, a geospatial economic analysis software, to visualize, compare, and assess the spatial distribution and alignment of governance indicators relative to economic output. The results revealed weak or partial spatial associations between GDP and individual governance dimensions, with some countries like Botswana and Namibia exhibiting strong governance scores despite modest GDPs. Conversely, countries such as South Africa, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of Congo recorded high GDPs despite lower governance scores in several areas. This mixed pattern suggests that while good governance may contribute to economic performance, it is not the sole determinant of GDP variation across the region. By integrating spatial analysis, this study addresses gaps in existing empirical literature that often overlook geographic patterns in governance-economic relationships. The findings offer policy insights for African governments and regional institutions to target governance reforms that are context-specific and spatially informed, in pursuit of inclusive and sustainable economic development.
