Geo-Economica v1.0: Development of a Geographical and statistical software for Spatial Economic analysis
Software developer(s): Fitzgerald Witika
Geo-Economica is a next-generation spatial economic analysis software designed to empower researchers, policymakers, planners, and development practitioners with the ability to visualize, analyze, and interpret economic phenomena through a spatial lens. Geo-Economica enables users to overlay economic indicators on geographic maps and perform complex analyses by linking location-based data with socioeconomic variables. The software is built with the principle that spatial dynamics—such as regional disparities, infrastructure access, urban-rural divides, and economic connectivity—play a critical role in shaping development outcomes. The software supports the importation of internal data (such as custom GeoJSON files from surveys, government records, or institutional data warehouses) and external data (such as live economic indicators from APIs or open databases). Once loaded, users can style datasets, assign values, highlight regions, and generate visual outputs with high precision. Through intuitive point-and-click interactions, even users with limited technical backgrounds can perform spatial analysis, identify economic clusters, compare regional performance, and draw actionable insights.

Contributions to the Stata software user community
- Witika OLS Time Series Regression Stata Plugin
Developed an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) time series regression plugin for the Stata software. The plugin bridges the gap between Stata’s native regress command and the specific, rigorous needs of time series analysis. While standard OLS commands provide a solid foundation, they often require multiple post-estimation steps to obtain diagnostics critical for time series data, such as tests for autocorrelation, non-normality, and multicollinearity. However, this plugin was developed to consolidate this workflow into a single, elegant command. It saves time, reduces the potential for coding errors, and delivers a publication-ready output that meets the highest academic standards.

- Advanced Witika OLS cross-sectional and time-series regression Stata Plugin
Developed an advanced OLS cross-sectional and time-series regression plugin for Stata, which implements both methods to allow users to generate all relevant pre-estimation tests, estimation tests and diagnostic tests for time series and cross-sectional using just a single Witika command in Stata. In addition, this Witika regression method in Stata also comes with a single command to generate all relevant data visualisation charts in Stata for time series and cross-sectional analysis based on OLS.
- Witika Data Envelopment Analysis Stata Plugin
Developed Witika DEA, a comprehensive Data Envelopment Analysis software package for Stata, featuring a full graphical installer application. The software implements both CCR (CRS) and BCC (VRS) efficiency models with input and output orientations, scale efficiency analysis, returns-to-scale classification, super-efficiency scoring using the Andersen-Petersen methodology, and bootstrap confidence intervals following Simar and Wilson (1998). A custom Big-M simplex linear programming solver was built entirely in Mata to eliminate external dependencies and ensure compatibility across Stata versions 14 through 19. The package includes a 16-chart professional visualization suite covering efficiency histograms, production frontiers, bootstrap forest plots, Malmquist decompositions, and a combined dashboard, all accessible through a single VIZ option. Additional modules provide Malmquist productivity index computation, post-estimation diagnostics with outlier detection, and an automated full analysis pipeline. The installer features a dark-themed tkinter GUI with automatic Stata installation detection, version targeting, backup creation, file verification, and one-click installation. This contribution makes advanced nonparametric efficiency analysis immediately accessible to researchers through a unified, dependency-free Stata plugin that combines modeling, diagnostics, bootstrapping, and comprehensive visualization in a single package.

Economic Policy Commentaries
- Zambian Business Times — Interview on Fuel Tax Suspension and Budget Deficit
The Zambian Business Times featured an economic analysis on the government’s decision to suspend tax on the importation of fuel products for a three-month period. The discussion centred on the potential negative impact of this fiscal measure on key economic variables and the likelihood of an increased budget deficit. Earlier, the Secretary to the Treasury had indicated that if the Middle East conflict and the fuel tax suspension persisted until the end of the year, Zambia’s revenue loss could approach K12 billion. The interview explored the implications of reduced tax revenue on the national budget and the prospect of the country resorting to additional borrowing to meet its fiscal obligations.

- Zambian Eye — Interview on Kwacha Appreciation and Export Sector Impact
The Zambian Eye featured an interview examining the significant appreciation of the Zambian Kwacha in early 2026, during which the local currency emerged as one of the world’s best-performing against the US dollar, posting nearly a 10 percent gain. The discussion addressed the key drivers behind this appreciation, including surging copper prices, the introduction of Chinese Yuan for mining tax payments, central bank directives prompting the offloading of US dollars, and improved investor confidence linked to economic management reforms. The interview highlighted the divergent impacts of the currency movement on different sectors, noting that while importers benefited from reduced costs and lower inflation, exporters faced diminished local currency earnings when converting foreign revenue, potentially weakening domestic production capacity. The broader implications for business planning amidst exchange rate volatility were also examined.

- Zambian Business Times — Interview on Decline in Lending to Civil Servants
The Zambian Business Times featured an interview discussing the Bank of Zambia’s report indicating a notable slowdown in lending to civil servants, which decelerated from 13.4 percent to 6.6 percent. The reduction was primarily attributed to a decline in the contribution of loans and advances to the public sector, largely linked to the Liquidity Management Operation conducted in the third quarter of 2025. The discussion also examined the contrasting trend in private sector credit, where growth moderated from 15.7 percent to 8.1 percent, a shift largely reflecting valuation effects arising from the sharp appreciation of the exchange rate. The interview provided expert insight into the implications of these credit dynamics for both the public and private sectors.
